The Wood Family Cabin

On a summer night, the sound of the babbling brook is like soft music.

The apple tree produced more apples that we could possibly use this year so Spencer found a friend to feed the apples to.

The cabin at dusk on a summer night.
Teton sunset from the front window of the cabin.
This last fall, the Forest Service began a controlled burn on the Targee Forest.  Smoke billows up from the fire but it soon finds its way down into the valley creating an eerie lingering cloud.

The Tetons were partially hidden in a cloud this morning.  Autumn has touched the aspens and painted them gold.

Autumn comes to the Big Hole Mountains.
A Mule Deer fawn comes to the creek for a drink.

A rare event.  A mother brings her triplet fawns to the creek for a drink.

Busted!  A herd of cow and calf elk run for cover after sneeking a few bites of pasture grass.  These elk have hundreds of thousands of acres extending a 100 miles in three directions from here on the Targee Forest, but the grass must always look a little greener on the other side of the fence.

The grownups and kids gather in the backyard.

It was a boat race on the creek!  The kids made their own boats and raced down the creek.  That water is cold, right off a snow bank just a short way up the canyon, but the kids don't mind.  They are city kids having fun in the country!
Winter was short this year.  Only two feet of snow on the ground!
The kid's shrieks of delight drift down to the cabin over new fallen snow.  The youngsters are up on the sledding hill and the  grownups are all at Targee Resort skiing.  They all reported that is was a "blue bird day", clear, cold, lots of new snow and plenty of sunshine.
Powder Day at Grand Targee.  There were lots of Powder Days this winter.

Ready set go!  Steve and Garret on the sledding hill.
Kira starts her run.  If only she could steer this thing!

Teton sunrise

A winter storm came through last night and wrapped the trees in a shroud of sparkling snow.  The Sandhill cranes, down in the valley, are flying higher and higher, calling to the others, gaining altitude and preparing to make their exodus South.
